Comparing Fresno to Phoenix
Fresno, California is often degraded in the national media as the armpit of the Golden State. It has been made fun of countless times. On the other hand, Phoenix, Arizona is often praised as some paradise in the desert. I don't get this. I've been to both places, and they both seem the same. Neither one is very pretty. In fact, both are very flat, with an endless stream of strip malls. Phoenix does have the ritzy community of Scottsdale, something Fresno can't touch. But I'm not quite sure why people flock to Phoenix, and yet try to avoid Fresno. Is it the weather? Granted, Fresno gets very foggy in the winter, but the night-time temperatures are about the same. And while both places are hot in the summer, the temperatures are much more sizzling in Phoenix. Why else do so many "Zonies" make the five hour trek to Southern California? If they lived in Fresno, it would only be two hours to the coast. |
