Fast Racing Isn't Always the Best Racing
There is talk that the newly renamed Auto Club Speedway of Southern California (formerly known as the California Speedway) is considering tearing up the track, and increasing the banking so much that cars will have to use restrictor plates. These square plates fit on top of the carburetor and reduce the horsepower by about 300, way down from the 850HP you normally see. This is to prevent cars from flying into the stands, as we saw at Talledega in 1987. A few drivers are great in the restrictor plate races and would love to see more races with the plates on. But most drivers had it. Since so much of the horsepower is choked down, it's harder for them to get away from the other drivers. On the other hand, it adds to the entertainment value, since the cars are so close together. Fans see more lead changes, as well as bigger crashes (some watch NASCAR for that; I don't, nor do most of the people I know). That's the reason the Auto Club Speedway is considering the change. Attendance at the track is down since the speedway got two races a few years back. The two restrictor-plate tracks, Daytona and Talledega, often have two of the most exciting races. If you attend a race at the Auto Club Speedway, you'll get blown away by the speeds that sometimes reach as high as 209 MPH. It's quite a spectacle, but that doesn't necessarily make for great racing. Often at that track, drivers will break away from each other by a few car lengths, and you're basically watching guys make laps around the track. I'd take side-by-side racing at 150 MPH over spread-out cars at 210 MPH any day. |
