How much should you tip the pizza delivery driver?

For some reason, a handful of people think pizza delivery drivers don't deserve tips, or a very small one at best, and certainly not as much as you'd give to a waiter at a restaurant.

I'm here to tell you the person bringing you that delicious cheese pie actually deserves AT LEAST the standard 15 to 20% tip, and in many cases, even more. Here's why.

First off, unlike wait staff at a restaurant, pizza drivers are risking their lives to bring you your food. Yes, that's right. Every time they make a delivery, they run the risk of being involved in a car crash. They do much more driving than the average person, so their chances of being injured of even killed are much higher.

Delivering pizza is considered one of the most dangerous jobs in America. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, for every 100,000 drivers, there are 27 deaths, which ranks in the top ten. There are all kinds of stories of drivers getting robbed for the cash they carry. Some of these incidents end in death.

Some drivers are lucky enough to work for a company that supplies a vehicle. But most drive their own cars. And while most of these folks are given a reimbursement, it's usually not enough to cover the overall cost of delivering. First of all, gas prices are at record levels these days, yet few pizza restaurants adjust their mileage policy accordingly. Some drivers have been forced to quit because the soaring fuel costs are cutting into their profits. Pizza drivers are also forced to do much more maintenance on their cars than the average person, including frequent oil changes and brake adjustments.

Good tips can actually benefit the customer. If you call for pizza often, and you tip well, your driver will remember. And they will be more likely to bring your food before others who don't tip as well. Hey, it's just human nature.

So the next time you order pizza, remember all it takes for the driver to get your food to you, and tip accordingly
